Volunteer helpers in Lourdes are called "Hospitaliers". This word has not a medical meaning. In french, "être hospitalier" simply means to be welcoming and friendly. The Hospitality is an original and exceptionnal institution created in 1885.

Its purpose:  to welcome the pilgrims, especially, but not only, the sick and to help them throughout their pilgrimage, to bring good order to important celebrations of the Sanctuary,  to pass on the Message of Lourdes. 

100 000 men and women from all over the world come each year to Lourdes as Hospitaliers.
