The sick and the hospitaliers
What is the most striking thing for the pilgrim of Lourdes, or the tourist, is the amount of sick or disabled personsin the Sanctuary. What would be Lourdes without them? They are everywhere and they've got, here, the first place.
All those who have suffered from life can find in Lourdes some comfort. On the contrary, our society teaches us, even undirectly, that suffering is nothing but an expensive burden.
Officially, 80 000 sick or disabled persons from all over the world comme to Lourdes each year. Touching the rock of the Grotto, they get the strength to face their moral or physical pain, and give meaning to their life.
Despite the sometimes unbearable spectacle of certain wounds or infirmities, the Sanctuary is a joyful haven. Joy is what a lot of these people live in Lourdes. In the collective imagination, Lourdes is the city of miracles, which means the city of the miraculous cures .
The first cures in Lourdes happened during the Apparitions. Almost immediately, sick persons started to come to the Grotto, more and more, and increasingly far. At that period, some people were so moved by the patients that they spontaneously decided to help. This group of men and women have never stopped growing, helping in the hospitalities, at the station, then at the airport, on the esplanade of the Rosary, at the Grotto, at the baths. These people have become the hospitaliers.
However, the healing of body can't neglect the healing of heart. The sick, as the so-called healthy, meet each other at the Grotto of the Apparitions, in front of the Virgin Mary : They support each other by the crossing smiles, the exchange of gesture and the shared prayers.
Therefore, the pilgrimage of Lourdes is lived more than ever like a moment of tenderness, sweetness and reconciliation of hearts.
A quote from the Bible dealing with the sick and the hospitaliers
"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."
Gospel of Matthhew (25:40)
